Going hand in hand with the series of carbon fibre triathlon bikes and frames, a time trial bike will be light and sturdy and aerodynamically designed to perform to its best.
The difference between a road bike and a time trial bike is that the TT bike will be more designed to be aerodynamic, using an airfoil shaped frames and parts and light weight components. Seeing as the majority of time trial competitions are on the flat with little or no incline, the design of a TT frame will be for aerodynamics rather than low weight.
Compared to a Triathlon bike, the Time Trial bikes and frames are very similar. In fact some of the time trial bikes can be used on the cycling stage of the triathlon. Bikes that are manufactured specifically for triathletes will have certain physical changes and differences that allow for less impact on the ham string muscles to save them for the running and swimming during the event. Also, compared to a time trial event, the cycling section of a triathlon can be more hilly where as the TT events are usually on a less undulating terrain.
