How Strong Is A Carbon Fiber Bike

There is a common misconception with riders and non-riders that Carbon Fiber frames on a bike - especially a mountain bike, are put there for strength.

This is not true.

Carbon Fiber bike frames and components are there for their weight advantages. CF is not tough and it is possible that if you get a large gouge or dent in your frame, the bike will be useless and the frame will have to be replaced. A small dent, tear or deep scratch can weaken the material to the point where it will crack easily.

Carbon Fiber can be repaired using fiber glass and epoxy resin but it will never be the same as before.

Please don't think that as soon as you bump or knock your new expensive carbon fiber bike that it will crack open like a nut - that is not the case - but if you are thinking of getting one for downhill or mountain biking then you may want to stick with an aluminum frame bike which will be cheaper and stronger for your needs.

That is why most road racing, time trial and triathlon bikes are made from carbon fiber - they are not designed to withstand the intense bumps and bangs of a downhill race or trail ride.

You might want to consider the bikes past if you are buying a second hand model. Make sure there are no cracks, gouges or dents in the frame before you buy!
